EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMAL LETTER

$100 Out-of-Pocket Fee

Our licensed providers can evaluate and confirm emotional support animals (ESAs). During the appointment, they’ll assess your mental health needs, discuss how an ESA may support your treatment, and confirm your ability to care for the animal.

Please note: ESAs are different from service animals and do not have the same access rights.

Colorado ESA Guidelines

  • Housing Protections: Under both federal (Fair Housing Act) and Colorado law, landlords must allow ESAs, even in buildings with “no pets” policies, as long as the animal isn’t a safety risk or causing property damage. Landlords can’t charge extra deposits or fees for ESAs.

  • ESA Letter Required: Only a legitimate ESA letter from a licensed healthcare provider in Colorado (written on official letterhead, including their license number, date, and signature) is valid. “ESA registrations” from online databases hold no legal weight.

  • No Access to Public or Workplaces: ESAs do not have access rights to public places, workplaces, or public transportation in Colorado (unless those places already permit pets).

  • Misrepresentation is a Crime: Under Colorado HB 16-1426 (from 2017), it is a Class 2 petty offense to falsely claim an animal is an ESA—or a service animal. First offenses may result in fines starting at $25, with increased penalties for repeat convictions.
